This research is situated in the practice of print design. Print design is the act of communicating messages, ideas, and information into the public realm through printed matter. Printed matter in this research refers to the material form that the communication takes, such as books, posters, brochures, or cards and packaging.
Since the invention of the printing press, printing methods and design practice have informed each other. However, with the introduction of digital technology and printing, have newer generations of designers become heavily reliant on computer screens, forgetting about the significance of print production in the design process, thus thinking less creatively in implementing printing methods?
The aim of this research and project is to provide comprehensive knowledge and information about current and experimental possibilities of printing methods, in order to promote new perspectives and innovative thinking when it comes to using digital printing methods, prompting designers to think or rethink about how we consider choices of printing methods in our practice.
Through this research I explore the possibilities of commonly available printing methods and equipment, making the case for the feasibility of carrying out experimental methods using these common printers. The data for this research was collected through a practice based research component with a reflective based approach, aiming to document practical applications of these printing methods being used in new, innovative ways.
